Biobased materials are on the cusp of a revolution in the construction industry, thanks to a new government program aimed at promoting the use of agriculturally based building materials. The first step taken by the government was a provision in the 2002 Farm Bill that recommended government agencies use natural products. However, there is another rationale for this program. Creating a biobased industry promotes sustainability and environmental stewardship. Products made from food crops like corn and soybeans contain no hazardous chemicals and are completely biodegradable.
