Biobased Materials
Biobased materials are on the cusp of a revolution in the construction industry, thanks to a new government program aimed at promoting the use of agriculturally based building materials. The first step taken by the government was a provision in the 2002 Farm Bill that recommended government agencies use natural products. The rationale behind this was a growing biobased products industry supports American farmers and preserves their way of life. In addition, the program seeks to help in the redevelopment of rural communities, some of which have been hit hard by globalization and industries moving abroad. Currently, much of the chemicals industry relies on petrochemicals and oil from foreign countries. By buying "bio," everyone can help reduce our nation's dependence on fossil fuels, especially foreign oil. If we don't move away from burning fossil fuels, carbon dioxide emissions will continue to rise and global warming's predicted outcomes will come to fruition. That may include rising sea levels, desertification, the extinction of millions of plants and animal species, and the devastation wrought by the flooding of low-lying metropolitan areas. However, there is another rationale for this program. Creating a biobased industry promotes sustainability and environmental stewardship. Products made from food crops like corn and soybeans contain no hazardous chemicals and are completely biodegradable. Buying biobased materials for construction purposes is one way we can do our part for the environment. There are a select few USDA certified biobased materials manufacturers.
