Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC)

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) is an independent and non-biased organization that has established a system for providing Building Code Bodies, Energy Service Providers, Architects & Specifiers, Property Owners and Community Planners with accurate radiative property data on roof surfaces that may improve the energy efficiency of buildings while positively impacting our environment. Cool Roofs are essentially a way to lighten up the color of roofs so that they reflect heat more effectively. As everyone who has worn a black shirt on a hot day knows, dark colors absorb heat and lighter ones reflect it.

On a citywide basis, this can reduce the impact of the urban heat island effect. This is a phenomenon that occurs when dark surfaces in urban areas (like roofs and asphalt streets) absorb heat and raise temperatures by two to 10 degrees compared to outlying areas. To reduce this effect and to reduce the energy costs involved in cooling buildings, reflective materials are used to restore existing dark colored roofing systems.

These are simple solutions, yet they have a profound impact on our basic energy needs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans spend $40 billion per year on electricity for air conditioning. Widespread use of solar reflective and emissive roofing materials like those listed by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) will dramatically change this number. Clearly, there are many, many reasons to "go green" and invest in cool roofs.
